Audition Information
We hold auditions for boys age 6-9 (entering either Prep or Intermediate) and girls 11-12 (for Ovation! Girls Training) who love to sing. Auditions are private and low-key, designed to make the kids feel comfortable and relaxed. They typically last around 15 minutes and parents are strongly encouraged to be present.
Singers are asked to prepare a song of their own choice, which will demonstrate voice quality and sense of pitch. The song can be as simple as "Happy Birthday" or a familiar holiday carol. Because they are older, the girls are asked to prepare a solo piece for the audition and should bring sheet music for the accompanist. A member of the music staff will then lead the boy/girl auditioning though a series of music drills to establish a sense of musical aptitude. The remainder of the audition is spent in conversation with the singer and family to establish a sense of character and potential commitment.
Auditions for boys ages 6-9 are held three times a year, usually in January, May, and September. Auditions for the girls age 11-12 are by appointment only. The Girls Training program is designed to prepare girls for entry to Ovation!, the mixed-voice high school ensemble. (The Ovation! Gentlemen are Portland Boychoir graduates.)
When all auditions are evaluated the music staff will notify each child's family of the results, usually within 2-3 days.
